Prayer & Fasting Wednesday

Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:36-46

Jesus’s prayer life is well-documented in the gospels. For example, the Son of God prayed,

  • Early in the morning (Mark 1:35)
  • While under stress (Matthew 26:36-46)
  • During His baptism (Luke 3:21-22)
  • Before eating (Matthew 14:19)
  • For His disciples (John 17)
  • Alone and with His disciples (Luke 9:18, 21-22)
  • All night when choosing His disciples (Luke 6:12-13)
  • When weary on a mountaintop (Mark 6:46)

A garden called Gethsemane, located across the Kidron Valley on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, is almost synonymous with Jesus's agonizing prayer hours before His arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

The Savior asked His disciples (especially Peter, James, and John) to pray with Him. Yes, they failed their friend by falling asleep while praying. But the entire scene begs the question, "Do you have friends who will agonize with and for you in prayer?"
